More athletes seek chiropractic
care for better performance
In the October 16, 1998 issue of the USA Today, was an article that featured Emmitt Smith, a football star from the Dallas Cowboys. Emmitt Smith is one of the best players in the game and in his ninth season as a professional. The article discusses his healthy lifestyle which includes regular chiropractic care. "I started doing this about four or five years ago," Smith said. "I believe that what I’m doing is what helps me go on. I think Warren Moon, (Seattle’s 41 year old quarter back) does the same thing. So I’ve become a big believer in servicing my body and making sure it is lined up properly and functioning the way it is supposed to on Sunday."

Smith joins an ever-growing list of professional athletes who regularly receive chiropractic adjustments. In June during the NBA basketball finals star players Scotty Pippin, and John Stockton were among those who received chiropractic care during breaks in the sixth and final game of the championship series. Even world heavyweight champion boxer Evander Holyfeild has been under care for years and regularly receives adjustments during training as well as immediately prior to his fights. These athletes and many more recognize the importance of a subluxation free body for maximum performance and health.

Golfers love chiropractic
The Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ reported a story about professional golfers using chiropractic on a regular basis.  Dr. Tom La Fountain is a chiropractor who travels with the PGA tour and regularly provides chiropractic to the pros.  Dr. La Fountain reports that up to 85 percent of the injuries on the PGA Tour and Senior Tour relate to the spine, and about 70 to 75 percent of those golfers receive regular chiropractic care.

The August 21, 2000 issue of the Salt Lake Tribune reported that senior pro golfer, Doug Tewell was delayed entering the Senior PGA tour due to spinal problems.  Tewell injured his back while playing a round of golf with his son in Oklahoma.  The injury kept him in bed for three days and required the use of a walker for two weeks.  On the recomendation of fellow pro Bob Tway,  Tewell decided to see a chiropractor.  His comments in the Tribune article summed up his reactions,  "the most incredible thing,  just a few little jerks," Tewell said. "I thought I had met Oral Roberts."

Professional women golfers also utilize chiropractic.  Dr. David E. Stude, a chiropractor and associate professor and faculty clinician at Northwestern Health Sciences University, lectures across the country with Lisa Masters, an LPGA golf pro, emphasizing the importance of chiropractic care for golfers.  Dr. Stude states, "Normally, each vertebra in the spine moves independently a certain number of degrees when our whole body is involved in an activity.  If that is not happening, for example, if two or more segments move as a whole unit, rather than moving independently, it can lead to one kind of vertebral mechanical dysfunction."

NFL Champion Broncos hire
two team chiropractors
In a July 15 PR-Newswire release from Denver is a story of two local chiropractors recently hired as team chiropractors for the two-time NFL champion Denver Broncos.  Dr. Dan Hill and Dr. JT Anderson became the official team chiropractors after being appointed by the team trainer Steve Antonopulos.  The two doctors had been taking care of several of the players for several years in their private practice.  Last year head coach Mike Shanahan integrated chiropractic into the Broncos full-time fitness regime.  From the results, it obviously helped, so the decision was made to have the chiropractors with the team again this year.  Drs. Hill and Anderson will provide chiropractic to the players at least twice per week during the regular season and off-season.

Tour de France champion depends on chiropractic
Lance Armstrong is the first American to win the Tour de Francethree years in row.  One of the methods he uses to keep in peak performance is chiropractic care.  The chiropractor he uses to help him is Dr. Jeff Spencer.  Dr. Jeff Spencer is no stranger to the sport. He is a former champion cyclist who competed on the 1972 United States Olympic Team as a sprint cyclist and he serves as chiropractor for the United States Postal Service Professional Cycling Team.

According to Dr. Spencer, “My job with Lance and the team is to optimize the neuromusculoskeletal component of their training and, in the event of a crash, minimize down time and get them back in the race as quickly as possible. I adjust them as needed and guide them in choices of diet and supplements, which helps reduce the likelihood of injury.”

Chiropractic helps athletes perform better by removing interference to their nervous system known as subluxations.  When the nerve system is free of interference the athlete can perform better.  In a study conducted by the New Zealand School of Chiropractic, University of Auckland, New Zealand reaction times were improved and shortened in volunteer subjects that received chiropractic care over those that did not.  The group that received the chiropractic adjustment showed a decrease in reaction time of 97 milli-seconds representing a 14.8 percent quicker reaction time.  Considering these findings is it any wonder why Lance Armstrong and thousands of other athletes use chiropractic care to obtain their peak performance?

Chiropractic gives a more balanced team
From the Savannah, Georgia Morning News, February 23, 2001 issue comes a human story of a young woman basketball player, Caroline Moore.  It seems a year ago Moore was unable to play for her team the "Beach Lady Bulldogs", until starting with chiropractic care.  "I know things happen for a reason," she said. "But I was disappointed. I was crying."

According to the paper, a local chiropractor discovered a problem in her right hip which left her right leg approximately one quarter of an inch shorter than her left leg.  After a chiropractic examination, x-rays and numerous chiropractic visits, as well as her work ethic, her leg difference has been decreased in length to an extremely small amount.  As a result Moore's coach felt compelled to comment.  His comments were, "I have gained a new-found respect for Caroline because of her courage and determination.  I don't know if I could do what she's done."
